How to Track Leads From Facebook Ads: Meta Pixel and Conversions API Explained
To track leads from Facebook ads you install the Meta Pixel on your site, fire a standard event such as Lead when someone enquires, and ideally send the same event from your server with the Conversions API so ad-blockers cannot hide it. Without this, Meta cannot learn who your customers are and you cannot see what your ads produce.
Step 1: Install the Meta Pixel
The pixel is a small piece of code from Meta placed on every page of your site. It reports page views so Meta can see who visits.
Step 2: Fire a Lead event
Add a standard Lead event at the moment someone shows real intent, such as submitting a form, typing their email into a booking box, or clicking a call button. Use one clear event for the action you want, so Meta has something to optimise for.
Step 3: Send it from your server too
The Conversions API sends the same event from your server to Meta. Browsers with ad-blockers or strict privacy settings can block the pixel, so the server copy fills the gap. Give both versions the same event ID so Meta counts it once.
Step 4: Test it
Use the Test Events tool in Meta Events Manager with ad-blockers switched off. Perform the action on your site and check that the event appears. Real (non-test) events can take a while to show in campaign settings.
Why it matters
Campaigns optimised for an event Meta has never seen tend to deliver expensively. Once real leads flow in, Meta can find more people like them.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Meta Pixel?
A code snippet on your website that reports visitor actions to Meta so it can measure and optimise your ads.
What is the Conversions API?
A way to send the same events from your server to Meta, so tracking still works when browsers block the pixel.
Why does my campaign say it hasn't received the event?
Meta has not seen that event recently. Perform the action on your site with ad-blockers off, and allow time for it to appear.
